Parents and carers are the most important educators of their children on all these matters. Then, when children go to early learning/nursery and school, their learning is also supported by the teachers, practitioners, and other adults in those places.

If your child’s nursery or school talks with you about the health and wellbeing curriculum (or Personal and Social Education), the part that is about relationships, sexual health and parenthood learning might be called RSHP education.

The topics that can be covered in RSHP learning are things like friendships and relationships, finding out about our body, learning about puberty, and as young people get older more detail about being healthy and safe when it comes to relationships and sexual health. There is also learning that helps children and young people think about the needs of babies and children and helps them reflect on what it might be like to be a parent or carer one day.

You are visiting the Chat. This is a research project that explores how parents and carers support their child’s learning at home; what they know and think about the RSHP learning going on at school, how they want home and school to work together (so that children and young people get the best learning experiences) and finally, what would help parents and carers at home in their role as their child’s first educator.
