More on learning at school
In nurseries, primary and secondary schools one of the key areas for learning is called Health and Wellbeing; this includes what is called learning about ‘Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood’ or RSHP for short.
The learning that happens in nursery or school is planned each year and takes account of the age and stage of the children in the class.
For children in nursery and primary school this can include talking and learning about things like growing up and their body, learning about puberty, about friendships, kindness and respect for others, and early learning about families, human reproduction, pregnancy, and babies.
For young people in secondary school this can include talking and learning about things like growing up and their body, making relationships work, respect for others, gender and equality, consent and being a parent.
Resources for learning
Nurseries and schools can use the best resources to support learning, and they have a national resource that they can draw on. It is also available for parents and carers to see. Schools and parents can look at the resource together and talk about which elements of the curriculum will be delivered in each school year.
To help schools plan what is delivered, and to make sure it is appropriate for each age and stage it is organised in Levels. While come children may be learning at an earlier or later Level for the most part this would be a guide to what your child might learn at nursery or school.
The resource also supports learning for children and young people with additional support needs and complex additional support needs. Again, it can be expected that schools and parents/carers will talk together about this learning.
Learning resources in denominational schools
The Scottish Catholic Education Service (SCES) was established in August 2003 by the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland to establish and implement national policy on all educational matters. In addition to the national RSHP resource, SCES has also published resources that support learning about health and relationships for schools in the denominational sector.
